Pokémon TCG Mega Evolution: Pitch Black | Release Guide & Collector Overview
Everything collectors need to know about Pokémon TCG: Mega Evolution – Pitch Black, featuring Mega Darkrai ex, ahead of its July 17, 2026 release.

Is Pitch Black worth the hype?
Mega Evolution: Pitch Black releases on July 17, 2026, with Mega Darkrai ex as the flagship Pokémon of the set. The expansion contains more than 115 cards, six Mega Evolution Pokémon ex and over 35 Pokémon and Trainer cards featuring special illustrations. Alongside Mega Darkrai ex, the set also introduces cards featuring Mega Zeraora ex, Mega Chandelure ex and Mega Excadrill ex.
For collectors, the biggest attraction is not only the return of Mega Evolution, but the darker visual identity of the set and the potential strength of its Illustration Rare and Special Illustration Rare cards. Pitch Black is largely based on the Japanese Abyss Eye expansion, which means collectors following the Japanese market will already recognize many of the artworks and card designs before the international release.
At Umami Vault, the main things we will be watching after launch are the pull rates, early prices of the main chase cards, demand for Mega Darkrai ex, availability of Pokémon Center products, Japanese versus English market performance and the first PSA population reports. Our opinion is that Pitch Black has the ingredients to become one of the stronger Mega Evolution releases of 2026. Darkrai has a loyal collector base, the theme is visually distinctive and the set has enough high-rarity artwork to maintain interest beyond release week.
However, we would not judge its long-term potential from launch prices alone. The first few weeks are usually driven by hype, low supply and early sales, so the real collector value will become clearer once more product is opened and the market begins to stabilize. This is a set worth considering if you collect Darkrai, Mega Evolution Pokémon or modern Japanese-inspired releases.
For sealed collectors, the most important factor will be how widely the product is printed and whether demand remains strong after the initial launch period. Umami Vault Rating: Artwork 9/10, Collector Appeal 8/10, Sealed Potential 8/10, Chase Card Strength 8.5/10, Overall Score 8.5/10.
